From Album NYUSFS Ferry Ride 2007 in Friends by Ariel Cinii
On the Thursday nearest the Fourth of July, my club makes a sacred annual pilgrimage upon the Staten Island Ferry. On that day we eat the sacred pizza and congregate on the outermost deck of the boat, whereupon we sing silly songs and catch up on each other’s lives. Our number was only fifteen this year; there were times when we’d be twice that, filling the Ferry with music and joyous noises. But attrition’s become an old friend.
We made the go-round only once, then stalked off into the drippy, drizzly evening in search of yet more food. Some wandered as far as the East Village, others stopped at Chinatown, where we waited and switched restaurants and ate, and then… we went for ice cream.
We’ll be back next year to do it again. We always come back.
